No matter what you feel like eating when you wake up in the morning, De Drie Graefjes has it

#1. De Drie Graefjes

No matter what you feel like eating when you wake up in the morning, De Drie Graefjes has it. American pancakes, tasty bagels, six types of club sandwich, burgers and egg dishes: this lunchroom has something for everyone. Add to this the fact that De Drie Graefjes is the go-to place for a delicious (and generous) slice of American pie, and it’s a place you can’t afford to miss. Here’s a tip: no matter how full you are, don’t leave without trying the Hummingbird cake. You’re welcome!

#2. Omelegg

Allergic to the bland fried omelette? We have the cure! At Omelegg, your wildest omelette-filling dreams come true. Ham and cheese is so outdated: in this homely setting, you can enjoy beef pastrami, avocado, tomato, mustard and farm-fresh cheese. Yes, all in one omelette! Surprising and sometimes rather daring, this hot spot is a must for eggheads.

#3. CT Coffee & Coconuts

Coffee and coconuts: a curious combination, I hear you say. But make no mistake, after a breakfast or lunch date at this former cinema on the Ceintuurbaan, you just won’t want to leave. The authentic location offers three floors of relaxed seating areas and a fantastic ambiance wherever you sit. In this cool, New York-style interior you can enjoy a tasty (and edgy) juice, sip a fresh tea or savour a homemade cooler. To eat, choose from overnight oats, granola, the breakfast burrito or the ‘hot mess breakfast taco’.

#4. Bakers & Roasters

A New Zealand vibe in an Amsterdam setting. Score your ‘brekkie’ here and you’ll start the day wearing a huge smile. This hip hangout is the child of a Brazilian and a Kiwi who shared their dreams during a night out in Hollywood. They immediately decided to give it a go and Bakers & Roasters was born. The result is a tasty hybrid menu featuring  huevos rancheros and a Brazilian power preakfast in addition to the vegan brekkie. They are not the cheapest, but you’re paying for produce that’s sustainable, organic and locally sourced.

This nostalgic gem is a record store, vintage shop, place-to-be for lovers of good olive oil, and lunchroom all in one

#5. Latei

This coffee bar screams retro… in a good way! From the Zeedijk you can already read ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ in hand lettering on the windows. Which is a sign that you’re about to time travel to the sixties and seventies. At Latei, you don’t just enjoy your breakfast, brunch or lunch: if you love one of the lamps in the interior, you can buy it on the spot and take it away with you. This nostalgic gem is a record store, vintage shop, place-to-be for lovers of good olive oil, and lunchroom all in one. You can also dine here three evenings a week, which often results in fusion dishes with surprising twists. Groovy!

#6. The Ysbreeker

Looking for the authentic Amsterdam location? The Ysbreaker is located in a stately and beautiful historic building on the River Amstel. From the terrace you can watch houseboats bobbing on the water and cyclists sailing by. If you were standing on this spot 300 years ago (yes, three centuries ago!), you’d be looking at the icebreaker ship that cleared the route between the Amstel and the Vecht in hard winters. The building, complete with stained glass windows, now houses a coffee and tea house, lunchroom, lounge area and much more. The menu options include steak tartare, burrata and oysters, but you’re also in the right place for an omelette, ‘croque’ or meatball sandwich.

Vegabond has what you want

#7. Vegabond

Tired of spending ages looking for a nice breakfast or lunch spot? Had enough of scrutinising every menu for vegetarian or vegan temptations? Vegabond has what you want. The menu transports you to a global veggie paradise. How creative is this kitchen! Red Thai Butternut Boats, Punjabi Picnic, Spinach Lentil-Feta Roll… the names alone make you curious – and hungry. Vegabond treats you to a surprising breakfast, wonderfully tasty vegetable combinations, sumptuous sweets and delicious coffees and lattes. Prefer other plant milk than ‘standard soya’? With oat, almond, coconut and cashew varieties, you’ll never be disappointed.

#8. MOAK Pancakes

However critical you may be, MOAK’s pancakes will blow your mind. Made from 100% organic wheat flour and without added sugar and salt, these Mokum crêpes are your perfect guilty pleasure. Because while that pancake may sound quite virtuous, fortunately owners Sten and Sammy don’t skimp on the chocolate sauce or Canadian maple syrup. Hearty appetite? The Vegalicious is loaded with grilled bell pepper, avocado, hummus, chili mix, oregano and olive oil. For equal satisfaction, choose the Mancake, the Golddigger, the Heavy Mama or the Infamous. Yum.
