#1. Lotti’s @ The Hoxton

Lotti’s is the lovely living room of the Hoxton Hotel on the Herengracht, in the heart of the city. Flop down on one of the easy chairs or sofas for a fine cup of coffee, move your seat towards the restaurant for an extensive (boozy) brunch, then linger over a good cocktail at the bar for evening fun. Lotti’s is a really enjoyable place where you can hang out all day with a perfect mix of people. It’s always good!

Herengracht 255,

#2. Morgan & Mees

A good place for a drink within walking distance of the Jordaan, Morgan & Mees is a beautifully decorated boutique hotel with nine rooms and a great bar/lounge, restaurant and terrace. Every day finds it filled with hip locals and tourists who have consulted the ‘right’ books. At Morgan & Mees you can enjoy a classic cocktail or a good glass of wine, accompanied by stylish snacks such as oysters, sashimi and shrimp croquettes.

Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat 2-6,

#3. The Lobby @ Hotel V Nesplein

Another enjoyable place where, before you know it, you have spent much more time than you planned! The Lobby is part of Hotel V.  It’s located on the Nes, right behind Dam Square, but without the hustle and bustle of the city centre. It feels like a cosy, warm living room where you can linger from coffee to cocktails with a good book, your true love or your whole family. Anything is possible. Tip: settle down for a drink and order one of the delicious flammkuchen. For example, the one with mackerel, artichoke and anchovy... or the one with aubergine, feta, pomegranate and almond... or the one with bacon, onion, Gruyere and parsley. Or just all three, of course.

Nes 49,

#4. Canvas @ Volkshotel

Canvas occupies the seventh floor of the building where the Volkskrant newspaper was produced for many years: it’s the bar, restaurant and club of the Volkshotel. You can go there all day, from an early breakfast to an after-dinner cocktail. When the weather is nice, you have to fight for a spot on the rooftop terrace, with its amazing view over the city. Extra fun: on the 7th floor you’ll also find Badplaats, a mini-spa complete with hot tubs. Normally it’s only open for hotel guests, but on Sundays everyone is welcome to come and relax while enjoying tasty snacks and drinks.

Wibautstraat 150,

#5. Twenty Third @ Okura

A household name in Amsterdam for years: Twenty Third, the chic cocktail and champagne bar on the 23rd floor of the 5-star Hotel Okura. It’s the perfect place if you want a luxurious snack (from Ciel Bleu, the adjacent 2-star restaurant) and drink with a breathtaking view over the city. You don’t have to be a hotel guest or have a reservation at one of the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurants for a seat at the bar – everyone is welcome. The best day to go here? Probably the day you get paid, because cheap it ain’t.

Ferdinand Bolstraat 333,

#6. SkyLounge Amsterdam @ DoubleTree by Hilton

Another great bar with a view of historic Amsterdam. During the day it’s a good place for a cup of coffee, a sandwich or a salad. Towards the evening, you can drink a good glass of wine or a cocktail with one of the many bites on offer. The bar, which is located on the 11th floor of the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Central Station, is crowded every day with tourists, day trippers, business people and locals – all of human life, in fact. Want to linger longer? Every evening, DJs transform SkyLounge Amsterdam into a lounge club.

Oosterdoksstraat 4,

#7. Taiko Bar @ Conservatorium Hotel

The Conservatorium Hotel is one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful hotels. The monumental building, which for many years housed the city’s music school, was originally built – at the end of the 19th century – as a bank, and it shows! Overwhelming, grand, and full of authentic details. Architect Piero Lissoni did a wonderful job transforming the building into an impressive modern hotel, which, despite its size, feels like an intimate living room. Walk through the lobby via the Brasserie to Taiko Bar for one of the many kinds of G&T on offer. Or try another good cocktail – the shakers know their stuff!

Van Baerlestraat 27,

#8. W Lounge @ W Hotel

Want to sit in the middle of Dam Square yet escape from the hustle and bustle of the city? Then have a drink on the top floor of the W Hotel. There’s a fantastic view of Amsterdam and you are literally next to the Royal Palace on Dam Square. The cocktail menu is equally impressive, with special creations from the Fabulous Shaker Boys. W Lounge is part of the international 5-star hotel chain W Hotels, which attaches great importance to design, music and fashion. Nice extra: W Lounge also has an outdoor terrace with a rooftop pool!

Spuistraat 175,

#9. Pulitzer’s Bar @ Pulitzer

Pulitzer’s Bar is a Nine Streets (‘negenstraatjes’) classic. A place where you can treat yourself to 5-star luxury after a long day of shopping by reclining in one of the comfortable armchairs and ordering a perfectly mixed cocktail. While you gaze over the canals, everything is prepared for you with great care and attention. Feeling hungry? Pulitzer’s restaurant Jansz – which is next to the bar – is also recommended.
